Choosing a Song

As I have chosen to do a Music Video for my end project, it is important to keep a song and a genre ready
For the genre, I wanted to pick a song that conveys something sad yet beautiful with an indie-like music style and has a post-liminal effect. Personally, my choice of music leans towards indie, so I wanted to incorporate that style of music too.
So firstly, I chose some songs that give out these vibes,
  • Matilda by Harry Styles
  • Older by Sasha Alex Solan
  • Ceilings by Lizzy McAlpine
  • Dancing with Your Ghost by Sasha Alex Solan

Meaning of each song

To understand the emotional direction of each song, I explored the meaning behind each lyric and the mood each track created

  • Matilda by Harry Styles
This song is about someone who has gone through emotional neglect, and even though they try to act like everything is fine, deep down, they’re still hurting. It’s a message of quiet support, reminding them they don’t have to carry that pain alone.

  • Older by Sasha Alex Sloan
“Older” reflects on childhood trauma and how growing up changes the way we see the past. The lyrics talk about slowly realising the emotional damage left behind and how that affects you as you grow older.

  • Ceilings by Lizzy McAlpine
This song captures the feeling of dreaming about a relationship that never really existed. It feels romantic at first, but then it shifts, and you realise it was just in your head. It’s about the heartbreak of letting go of that fantasy.

  • Dancing with Your Ghost by Sasha Alex Sloan
A song about missing someone who is no longer around. The person feels like they’re still with you in your mind, so you hold onto their memory. It’s soft, emotional, and creates a quiet space to show loss and longing.
  • Numb Little Bug by Em Beihold
This song is about feeling emotionally numb and disconnected from life. Even when everything seems fine on the outside, the person struggles with stress, anxiety, and a sense of being small or overlooked. The lyrics and soft, dreamy melody create a mood of introspection and vulnerability, highlighting the difficulty of coping with these hidden emotions.

Final song selection - Numb little Bug

After reviewing each song, I decided to go forward with Numb Little Bug by Em Beihold.
The mood, pacing, and lyrical depth fit well with my emotional numbness / mental health concept and the indie pop genre.
The song also allows me to create a strong visual story with one actress and a simple, manageable background, making it convenient for production while effectively conveying the song’s introspective and vulnerable theme.

Genre and Mood exploration

Here, I aimed to explore the genre and mood of similar songs to examine how the music video concept has been developed, and to investigate how the music video's narrative (the story) relates to the song's actual theme. The main theme and genre of my choice of song (Numb little bug )    Main theme - mentalillness, post liminal sad but beautiful Genre - Indie pop Some songs that depict a similar concept to the post-liminal theme and the genre of indie pop Ceilings by Lizzy McAlpine Heather by Connan Gray Ceiling By Lizzy McAlapine  Theme - Grief and blurred memory after a breakup Genre - Indie pop  The main meaning of the song  can be interpreted in two ways: as a lingering feeling of a broken relationship or as the aftermath of an imagined scenario. The song can be taken as an understanding of the real-world situation of a breakup, even though the relationship wasn't real. How does the song lyric match the post-liminal concept?  First chorus - The ch...

Behind the scenes

Here I'll show the behind-the-scenes of me filming my music video Here the camera was not the actors face is not in the middle of the screen so the shot was not right Here the camera was not the actor's face was not in the middle of the screen so the shot was not right I  first wanted to take the shot where the dog was sitting beside her, but it was a failure because it did not show any interest, so we took the shot with the dog sitting down and looking up Small mistake She did not look angry enough in this shot  I did not include this clip in the last MV It was actually a very fun experience filming the MV, but we also had an annoying number of mistakes which we had to correct and move forward. These show the wrong takes and the bloopers of filming (behind the scenes)

Practicing Photography of backgrounds(locations)

Here I will be practicing some photography with different backgrounds that bring out different moods Places Melancholy Place - A lane with houses This picture feels calm but a little lonely. The empty stone road and quiet houses make it seem peaceful, like no one is around. The dark clouds with bits of blue sky give it a dramatic feeling, like rain might come soon. It feels calm, quiet, and a little sad in a nice way. Scenes to film in this background  (empty road and cloudy sky) can be used for a dramatic walking away scene, someone feeling lonely or lost. it can also be for a new beginning scene like someone coming to a new town. it’s good for a quiet talking moment between two characters or just before a storm to make it feel suspenseful. Serenity Place - A tea cultivation This background gives a very peaceful and calming feeling. The green tea bushes in the front with the mountains in the distance make it feel natural and quiet. The orange and pink sunset adds a warm, dre...
