Choosing a Concept

As I chose my genre to be indie as a musical genre, Indie too has different themes and concepts that bring out the actual meaning and story to the song. For example Heart heartbreak, nostalgia, yearning

  • Heartbreak – Focuses on the emotional aftermath of a breakup or love lost.
Example: “Heather” by Conan Gray shows unrequited love and jealousy through soft, emotional visuals.

  • Coming of Age – Captures personal growth, identity, and the confusion of youth.
Example: “Motion Sickness” by Phoebe Bridgers explores emotional maturity and moving on.

  • Love Confession – About the vulnerability of revealing hidden feelings.
Example: “Lover” by Taylor Swift presents soft aesthetics and warm-toned visuals to express intimacy.

  • Grief or Loss – Centers on absence and longing.
Example: “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish uses stillness and soft visuals to express inner emptiness.

  • Nostalgia / Dreamlike Reflection – Emphasizes faded memories, often blurred with fantasy.
Example: “Cardigan” by Taylor Swift mixes reality and imagination to portray past love.

  • Post-liminal – A transitional state where the character is stuck between letting go and moving forward, often with surreal or slow-paced visuals.
Example: “Ceilings” by Lizzy McAlpine shows a dreamlike, floating moment that feels both real and imagined.

After exploring all these themes, I was drawn most to the post-liminal concept, as it expresses a subtle, blurry in-between feeling—where love, memory, and imagination all blend together. It matched the emotion I wanted to bring out in my music video the best.

Genre and Mood exploration of similar songs

Here, I wanted to try to explore the genre and mood of similar songs to see how the music video concept has been built, and to see how the idea of the music video (the story) has been related to the actual theme of the song. The main theme and genre of my choice of song (Dancing with Your Ghost)    Main theme - Post-liminal, sad but beautiful Genre - Indie pop Some songs that depict a similar concept to the post-liminal theme and the genre of indie pop Ceilings by Lizzy McAlpine Heather by Connan Gray Ceiling By Lizzy McAlapine  Theme - Grief and blurred memory after a breakup Genre - Indie pop  The main meaning of the song  can be interpreted in two ways: as a lingering feeling of a broken relationship or as the aftermath of an imagined scenario. The song can be taken as an understanding of the real-world situation of a breakup, even though the relationship wasn't real. How does the song lyric match the post-liminal concept?  First chorus - The ch...
