research artist of the same genre

In this section, I aim to research artists within the same genre to understand how they craft their public image and engage with audiences. By analyzing their visual branding, social media presence, I can identify the elements that make their profiles appealing and memorable. This research will help me in developing my own artist persona, ensuring that their aesthetic, content, and online interactions are cohesive, eye-catching, and capable of resonating with a targeted audience.

All artists switch their music tastes regularly, so here I have taken some artists who have used indie music

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is an American singer and songwriter known for her storytelling in music. She started her career in country and later moved into pop, becoming one of the most successful and influential artists worldwide.

Taylor Swift has used an indie type of music for two of  her albums, which are,
  • Folklore(2020)
  • Evermore(2020)

Both Folklore and Evermore are different from her earlier pop music. These albums are in an indie-folk and alternative style with soft acoustic sounds, piano melodies and storytelling lyrics. To match this music Taylor promoted herself in a new way. She used earthy tones, forest settings and a simple natural style in her photos and videos. She also released the albums as a surprise which made them stand out and catch the attention of her audience online.

while promoting these albums, Taylor Swift  matched her style and the way she posted on social media changed to match the style of the album

As it is shown, it shows how the artist changes their profile just to promote their album to gain more audience.

What I Can Learn for My Own Artist

From Taylor’s promotion, I can learn that an artist’s style and image should always match their music. For my own artist, I need to make sure the clothes, colours, and visuals I use connect with the genre and create a strong identity. I should also use consistent themes on social media to make the artist recognizable and eye-catching. Just like Taylor used surprise releases, I can think of creative ways to keep my audience interested. I could also create a unique symbol, item, or style that people will always connect with my artist. Finally, I should keep the online voice natural and engaging so the audience feels connected and wants to follow the journey of the artist.

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish is an American singer-songwriter known for her unique blend of indie-pop, electropop, and dark, moody sounds. She gained fame with her debut single “Ocean Eyes” in 2016 and quickly became a global sensation for her distinctive voice, haunting melodies, and deeply personal lyrics. Billie is also recognized for her bold visual style, often using oversized clothing and striking music video concepts to express her artistic identity.

Billie Eilish has used an indie type of music for two of  her albums, which are,

  • Don’t Smile at Me (2017)
  • When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019)

Billie Eilish promoted Don’t Smile at Me and When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? through a mix of social media engagement, striking visuals, and personal branding. She shared behind-the-scenes clips, studio sessions, and personal stories on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, creating a strong connection with fans. Her music videos were often dark, quirky, and visually unique, helping her songs go viral and reach wider audiences. She also performed at live shows, small venues early on, and later at festivals and online streams, keeping fans engaged worldwide. Additionally, Billie promoted albums with distinctive merchandise, fashion style, and occasional surprise releases or teasers, building hype and maintaining a recognizable brand.

What I Can Learn for My Own Artist

From Billie Eilish’s promotion, I can learn that connecting with fans in a personal and authentic way is key. For my own artist, I need to make sure the music, visuals, and online presence all reflect their personality and style. I can share behind-the-scenes content, stories, or sneak peeks on social media to make fans feel involved. Creating a recognizable aesthetic through music videos, album artwork, or fashion will help the artist stand out. Using creative release strategies, like teasers or surprise drops, can keep the audience excited. Finally, I should make the online voice natural and engaging so that fans feel connected and want to follow the artist’s journey.

Genre and Mood exploration

Here, I aimed to explore the genre and mood of similar songs to examine how the music video concept has been developed, and to investigate how the music video's narrative (the story) relates to the song's actual theme. The main theme and genre of my choice of song (Numb little bug )    Main theme - mentalillness, post liminal sad but beautiful Genre - Indie pop Some songs that depict a similar concept to the post-liminal theme and the genre of indie pop Ceilings by Lizzy McAlpine Heather by Connan Gray Ceiling By Lizzy McAlapine  Theme - Grief and blurred memory after a breakup Genre - Indie pop  The main meaning of the song  can be interpreted in two ways: as a lingering feeling of a broken relationship or as the aftermath of an imagined scenario. The song can be taken as an understanding of the real-world situation of a breakup, even though the relationship wasn't real. How does the song lyric match the post-liminal concept?  First chorus - The ch...

Behind the scenes

Here I'll show the behind-the-scenes of me filming my music video Here the camera was not the actors face is not in the middle of the screen so the shot was not right Here the camera was not the actor's face was not in the middle of the screen so the shot was not right I  first wanted to take the shot where the dog was sitting beside her, but it was a failure because it did not show any interest, so we took the shot with the dog sitting down and looking up Small mistake She did not look angry enough in this shot  I did not include this clip in the last MV It was actually a very fun experience filming the MV, but we also had an annoying number of mistakes which we had to correct and move forward. These show the wrong takes and the bloopers of filming (behind the scenes)

Practicing Photography of backgrounds(locations)

Here I will be practicing some photography with different backgrounds that bring out different moods Places Melancholy Place - A lane with houses This picture feels calm but a little lonely. The empty stone road and quiet houses make it seem peaceful, like no one is around. The dark clouds with bits of blue sky give it a dramatic feeling, like rain might come soon. It feels calm, quiet, and a little sad in a nice way. Scenes to film in this background  (empty road and cloudy sky) can be used for a dramatic walking away scene, someone feeling lonely or lost. it can also be for a new beginning scene like someone coming to a new town. it’s good for a quiet talking moment between two characters or just before a storm to make it feel suspenseful. Serenity Place - A tea cultivation This background gives a very peaceful and calming feeling. The green tea bushes in the front with the mountains in the distance make it feel natural and quiet. The orange and pink sunset adds a warm, dre...
