Different kinds of Music Videos

Music videos come in many different styles, each designed to match the mood, story, or message of the song. Some focus on storytelling, while others highlight performance, visuals, or artistic expression. Each type has its own way of connecting with the audience - whether it’s showing emotions through a narrative, showcasing choreography, or using creative concepts and effects. In this post, I’ll explore the different kinds of music videos and how they bring songs to life through visuals.

Some types of Music videos,

Documentary-Style Videos

These show real-life moments, behind-the-scenes clips, or personal footage of the artist. They focus on authenticity and emotion, giving viewers a glimpse into the artist’s real experiences or creative process.
  •  Example - Photograph by Ed Shearen
As you can see, it shows how the singer has grown up to achieve his dream of being a singer; it shows his life story as a documentary in the music video

“Photograph” by Ed Sheeran is a documentary-style music video that uses real clips from his childhood and early career. It shows his journey from a young boy to a performer, matching the song’s nostalgic and emotional tone. The video feels warm and personal, helping fans connect with the memories and feelings behind the song.

Narrative Music Videos

These tell a story that matches the song’s lyrics or emotions. They often have characters, settings, and a clear storyline that helps bring the song’s message to life through visuals.

  • Example - Love Story by Taylor Swift

Love Story” by Taylor Swift is a narrative music video that tells a romantic story inspired by Romeo and Juliet. It follows the journey of two lovers overcoming obstacles, matching the lyrics and emotions of the song. The clear storyline and dramatic visuals help bring the song’s message to life, making it easy for viewers to connect with the romance and drama.

Artists use narrative MVs to make songs more relatable and emotional. In Taylor Swift’s Love Story, the story of two lovers brings the lyrics to life, helping viewers connect with the song’s message.

Performance Music Videos

Focus on the artist singing, dancing, or playing instruments. They highlight energy, stage presence, and talent rather than telling a story.

  • Example - Super by Seventeen

“Super” by Seventeen is a performance music video that focuses on powerful choreography and group synchronization. The visuals highlight their energy, teamwork, and stage presence, matching the song’s strong and confident vibe.

Lyric Videos

Display the song’s lyrics on screen in creative ways. They help listeners follow the words while adding simple visuals, colors, or animations that match the mood of the song.

  • Example - The Way I Loved You by Taylor Swift

“The Way I Loved You (Taylor’s Version)” lyric video keeps visuals minimal, showing a ticking clock as the lyrics appear. The simplicity matches the nostalgic theme of the song and lets the focus stay on the emotions in the lyrics.

Concept Music Videos

Use creative or symbolic visuals to express the song’s theme or mood rather than telling a clear story. They focus on aesthetics, color, and emotion to make the music feel more artistic and memorable.

  • Example - When the Party is over by Billie Eilish

When the Party's Over is a concept-style music video. It’s minimalistic and symbolic, focusing on her slowly crying black tears. The visuals emphasize emotional pain and vulnerability, matching the haunting, melancholic mood of the song.

 Animation Music Videos

Animated Music Videos Use drawn, computer-generated, or stylized animation instead of live action. They can tell stories, show abstract visuals, or create imaginative worlds, adding a creative and artistic layer that brings the song to life in ways live footage can’t.

I made a small storyboard based on the Music video animations

the story -
The animated music video for “Birds” by Imagine Dragons tells a poignant story of a young girl who discovers her unique ability to grow wings, symbolizing themes of identity, acceptance, and loss. Through expressive animation and emotive storytelling, the video complements the song's introspective lyrics, creating a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience.

Animated Music Videos bring creativity, imagination, and visual storytelling to the audience. They can convey emotions, themes, or abstract ideas in ways that live-action videos often can’t, making the song more memorable and engaging.

Music videos take many forms—storytelling, performance, concept, animation, and more. Each type adds a unique way to connect with the audience and bring the song’s emotions to life.

Researching about this made me understand which concept is more suitable for me and what kind of music video will clearly portray the vision of my MV

Genre and Mood exploration

Here, I aimed to explore the genre and mood of similar songs to examine how the music video concept has been developed, and to investigate how the music video's narrative (the story) relates to the song's actual theme. The main theme and genre of my choice of song (Numb little bug )    Main theme - mentalillness, post liminal sad but beautiful Genre - Indie pop Some songs that depict a similar concept to the post-liminal theme and the genre of indie pop Ceilings by Lizzy McAlpine Heather by Connan Gray Ceiling By Lizzy McAlapine  Theme - Grief and blurred memory after a breakup Genre - Indie pop  The main meaning of the song  can be interpreted in two ways: as a lingering feeling of a broken relationship or as the aftermath of an imagined scenario. The song can be taken as an understanding of the real-world situation of a breakup, even though the relationship wasn't real. How does the song lyric match the post-liminal concept?  First chorus - The ch...

Behind the scenes

Here I'll show the behind-the-scenes of me filming my music video Here the camera was not the actors face is not in the middle of the screen so the shot was not right Here the camera was not the actor's face was not in the middle of the screen so the shot was not right I  first wanted to take the shot where the dog was sitting beside her, but it was a failure because it did not show any interest, so we took the shot with the dog sitting down and looking up Small mistake She did not look angry enough in this shot  I did not include this clip in the last MV It was actually a very fun experience filming the MV, but we also had an annoying number of mistakes which we had to correct and move forward. These show the wrong takes and the bloopers of filming (behind the scenes)

Practicing Photography of backgrounds(locations)

Here I will be practicing some photography with different backgrounds that bring out different moods Places Melancholy Place - A lane with houses This picture feels calm but a little lonely. The empty stone road and quiet houses make it seem peaceful, like no one is around. The dark clouds with bits of blue sky give it a dramatic feeling, like rain might come soon. It feels calm, quiet, and a little sad in a nice way. Scenes to film in this background  (empty road and cloudy sky) can be used for a dramatic walking away scene, someone feeling lonely or lost. it can also be for a new beginning scene like someone coming to a new town. it’s good for a quiet talking moment between two characters or just before a storm to make it feel suspenseful. Serenity Place - A tea cultivation This background gives a very peaceful and calming feeling. The green tea bushes in the front with the mountains in the distance make it feel natural and quiet. The orange and pink sunset adds a warm, dre...
