Costume research

Costume Research (Mental Health Comparison with My MV)

 Use of Normal, Everyday Clothing

In many music videos that portray mental health struggles, the character is dressed in ordinary, casual clothing. This is done to create realism and relatability. Mental illness does not have a specific “look,” and people who struggle often appear completely normal on the outside.

In my music video, the character wears simple, everyday clothes. This reflects how mental health issues are internal and invisible. The costume does not exaggerate the condition but instead presents the character as an ordinary person experiencing internal conflict.

This links strongly to the theme of Numb Little Bug, where the lyrics suggest functioning normally while feeling emotionally detached.

Mental Health Link:
Hidden struggles, internalised emotions, realism.

 Muted / Neutral Colours

Mental health-based music videos often use muted tones such as black, grey, white, or soft colours. These colours symbolize emptiness, numbness, or emotional dullness.

In my MV, the costume avoids bright, vibrant colours. The neutral clothing enhances the feeling of emotional flatness and supports the overall tone of the video. It helps maintain visual consistency with the themes of isolation and mental exhaustion.

The simplicity of colour reflects the character’s emotional state — drained and disconnected.

Mental Health Link:
Emotional numbness, lack of excitement, detachment.

Minimal Styling

In many representations of depression or anxiety, the character’s styling is natural and minimal. Heavy makeup, bold fashion, or dramatic styling are usually avoided because the focus is on authenticity rather than glamour.

In my MV, the character’s appearance is kept simple. This reinforces the idea that the struggle is internal rather than performative. The lack of dramatic costume shifts keeps the attention on facial expressions and body language, which communicate the emotional narrative.

This aligns with conventions seen in mental health music videos where realism is prioritised.

Mental Health Link:
Authenticity, vulnerability, subtle suffering.

Comparison with Typical Mental Health Music Videos

Many artists use simple costuming to reflect emotional themes. For example, in Numb Little Bug by Em Beihold, the styling is relatable and casual rather than stylised or exaggerated.

My MV follows similar conventions by:

  • Using normal clothing

  • Avoiding bright, distracting fashion

  • Keeping the look natural and realistic

However, my interpretation focuses more on stillness and emotional restraint through costume consistency, reinforcing the idea of being “stuck” in a mental state.

 Conclusion

Overall, the costume in my music video supports the representation of mental health by maintaining realism and subtlety. The use of everyday clothing emphasizes that mental illness is not always visible and can affect anyone.

By avoiding dramatic or exaggerated styling, the MV communicates authenticity and aligns with the themes of emotional numbness and hidden struggle portrayed in Numb Little Bug.

Genre and Mood exploration

Here, I aimed to explore the genre and mood of similar songs to examine how the music video concept has been developed, and to investigate how the music video's narrative (the story) relates to the song's actual theme. The main theme and genre of my choice of song (Numb little bug )    Main theme - mentalillness, post liminal sad but beautiful Genre - Indie pop Some songs that depict a similar concept to the post-liminal theme and the genre of indie pop Ceilings by Lizzy McAlpine Heather by Connan Gray Ceiling By Lizzy McAlapine  Theme - Grief and blurred memory after a breakup Genre - Indie pop  The main meaning of the song  can be interpreted in two ways: as a lingering feeling of a broken relationship or as the aftermath of an imagined scenario. The song can be taken as an understanding of the real-world situation of a breakup, even though the relationship wasn't real. How does the song lyric match the post-liminal concept?  First chorus - The ch...

Behind the scenes

Here I'll show the behind-the-scenes of me filming my music video Here the camera was not the actors face is not in the middle of the screen so the shot was not right Here the camera was not the actor's face was not in the middle of the screen so the shot was not right I  first wanted to take the shot where the dog was sitting beside her, but it was a failure because it did not show any interest, so we took the shot with the dog sitting down and looking up Small mistake She did not look angry enough in this shot  I did not include this clip in the last MV It was actually a very fun experience filming the MV, but we also had an annoying number of mistakes which we had to correct and move forward. These show the wrong takes and the bloopers of filming (behind the scenes)

Practicing Photography of backgrounds(locations)

Here I will be practicing some photography with different backgrounds that bring out different moods Places Melancholy Place - A lane with houses This picture feels calm but a little lonely. The empty stone road and quiet houses make it seem peaceful, like no one is around. The dark clouds with bits of blue sky give it a dramatic feeling, like rain might come soon. It feels calm, quiet, and a little sad in a nice way. Scenes to film in this background  (empty road and cloudy sky) can be used for a dramatic walking away scene, someone feeling lonely or lost. it can also be for a new beginning scene like someone coming to a new town. it’s good for a quiet talking moment between two characters or just before a storm to make it feel suspenseful. Serenity Place - A tea cultivation This background gives a very peaceful and calming feeling. The green tea bushes in the front with the mountains in the distance make it feel natural and quiet. The orange and pink sunset adds a warm, dre...
